Theorem of the Day Recognition

The "Design of the Century" recently constructed by OU researchers Tony Forbes, Mike Grannell and Terry Griggs has been selected as the 100th Theorem of the Day on the website operated by writer and scientist Robin Whitty

The theorem proves that there exists a 2-chromatic Steiner system
S(2, 4, 100) in which every block contains three points of one colour and one point of the other colour.

In combinatorial mathematics, a Steiner system is a type of block design. Steiner Triple Systems are described in more detail in this Wikipedia article

The underlying research paper relating to this work can be found here. The associated computer search took over 40 weeks of PC time, and the resulting design solves a problem which had eluded other researchers for over 25 years.
